Meet our Inspiration

Sylvia Nimako
Sixteen years ago, Sylvia arrived in the United States from Ghana and began her remarkable journey with Visiting Nurse Private Home Care as a Caregiver. From the very beginning, it was clear that Sylvia brought something special—not only in her work but in her vision. Through her dedication and insight, the growing need for Caregivers from other countries was recognized, sparking a dream to support and uplift others facing similar paths.

Sylvia was the very first Caregiver at Visiting Nurse Private Home Care. She advanced from a Certified Nursing Assistant to a pivotal Human Resources role, where she now leads a dedicated team of staff members. While raising three wonderful children, she also pursued her degree in Human Resources—demonstrating the true spirit of perseverance and commitment.

Several years ago, Sylvia reached another milestone by purchasing her first home, a testament to her hard work and determination. She is not only an exceptional leader and role model, but also a dear friend and a true angel in the lives of many.

We are honored to celebrate Sylvia’s inspiring story and the lasting impact she continues to make every day.
Our Story
After five years working with amazing caregivers through Visiting Nurse Private Home Care, I thought I understood their world—until one evening changed everything. A caregiver I walked out with after her 12-hour shift shared that she was heading home with a duct-taped car to 3 bedroom apartment she shared with her family of 5,and a homeless friend she’d taken in from church. Her generosity humbled me. In that moment, I became her student—and her advocate.

That night, I realized many caregivers give everything to others while quietly struggling themselves—long commutes, shared housing, single parenting, and going without basic essentials.

Inspired by my dear friend Sylvia, we founded Sylvia’s Attic, a nonprofit that supports caregivers with furniture, household goods, and whatever else they need to feel at home and cared for, too.

Thank you for helping us care for the caregivers.
